India’s Ambitious PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: A Solar Homes Initiative For Providing Free Electricity

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

In a bold step to promote clean energy, the Government of India has launched a program called the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to provide free electricity to millions of families and households with rooftop solar. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was first announced in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the program principally targets families that consume 300 units of electricity or less in a given month.

The scheme comes with a funding of ₹75,000 crore and provides subsidies for rooftop solar installation throughout the country. The objective of the program is to allow citizens to produce their own clean electricity, remove the financial constraints many feel when required to pay their energy and power bills, while also maintaining obligations for India and its environment.

The families that apply and ultimately receive funding for rooftop solar through the program will produce their own solar energy during the daylight hours, reducing their need for electricity from the grid. Families that can produce more than they consume can either save on their electricity bills or earn revenue when their surplus electricity is supplied to the grid through net metering.

Energy experts consider the program a necessary measure to wean India off coal and fossil fuels that remain predominant in its energy market, cause dangerous pollution and contribute to climate change. By migrating to renewable sources of energy in implementation of the Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, India can reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security by depending less on imported sources of fuel.

To facilitate participation, the national government made a dedicated online portal available to their citizens to register, confirm eligibility, apply for subsidy, and track the application. Industry participants, such as Galo Solar, are working with the government to enable reliably installed rooftop solar systems for homeowners, and assist in the process of installation.

The goal is to install rooftop solar on one crore homes, including homes in urban and rural regions, and to create thousands of new jobs related to solar, which will involve manufacturing, installation and maintenance of solar systems, within the emerging green economy.

Jai, the CEO of Galo Solar said “The Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is not just a free solar subsidy program — it’s a movement that gives Indian families control over their energy future, while delivering more sustainability for our planet.”

India’s movement towards sustainable energy goals through the implementation of rooftop solar is an incredible opportunity to change the way electricity is created and utilised across the country.
